What is the degree program about?
Are you interested in how a search engine can find the right web pages for your query and make suggestions for additions and corrections? How voice control works on new smartphones? How computers can automatically pull facts and opinions from digital text assets (e.g., Wikipedia, online news stories, and social media)? And beyond that, are you curious about what’s behind the term „digital humanities“ (i.e., the „digital humanities“)? Then studying Computational Linguistics might be of interest to you.
Computational linguistics researches the processing of human language and develops computer models to understand, produce and learn language. For this purpose, theories and methods from computer science, linguistics, and cognitive science are used, and fundamentals from mathematics, such as formal logic or statistics, are applied. Computational Linguistics at FAU focuses on technical and practical aspects of machine language processing. The necessary basic knowledge of theoretical and empirical linguistics can be acquired in a linguistic subject to be studied in combination.
The study of Computational Linguistics qualifies you to participate in the development of new products – since computer-aided information retrieval will continue to be significant in the future and the processing of language data will always play a central role in this, it can be assumed that the career prospects for graduates of computational linguistics are permanently good.

The program is divided into two phases. In the foundation phase, the following subjects are completed: Fundamentals of Computational Linguistics (includes the modules „Fundamentals of Computational Linguistics I“, „Fundamentals of Computational Linguistics II“; „Tools and Working Techniques“), Computer Science Fundamentals (modules „Fundamentals of Computer Science“, „Conceptual Modeling“, „Database Systems“, „Multimedia Technology“). The advanced phase contains the modules „Machine Language Processing, „Advanced Module in Computational Linguistics“ and the internship.

Der Nachweis einer Studienberatung ist bei der Immatrikulation vorzulegen.
