Studium Philosophicum
Studium Philosophicum (orientation studies)

Studium Philosophicum is a module studies program which is designed to help students find out what they would like to study from a broad range of subjects offered at the faculty. Students can choose modules based on their individual interests with lectures, seminars, tutorials and other teaching units in almost 30 subjects at the faculty. All of the modules are part of the Bachelor’s degree curriculum. Any modules that students complete in a module studies program can be accredited toward a Bachelor’s degree. During the Studium Philosophicum program, students are enrolled at the university.

What is the degree program about?
For prospective students, the Studium Philosophicum offers the opportunity to get to know the various subjects of the Faculty of Humanities, Social Sciences and Theology and to experience university life without the pressure.
The Studium Philosophicum serves as an initial orientation for prospective students. Ideally, one or two of the subjects you have chosen will spark your enthusiasm and you will decide to stick with them – and if not, there is no need to be frustrated, as an orientation course is there to “try things out”. The semester (or the year in the case of an extension) is certainly not a waste of time.
Almost all subjects can be studied that do not have admission restrictions and do not require advanced registration (such as Psychology and Cultural Geography). With almost 30 subjects from the humanities and social sciences as well as religion-related disciplines, there is guaranteed to be something for everyone.
Please refer to this web page for a list of subjects: https://www.phil.fau.de/studium/studienangebot/bachelor/
Participants in the Studium Philosophicum are enrolled students within the meaning of the Bavarian Higher Education Innovation Act. They are not eligible for BAföG funding.

The standard period of study for the Studium Philosophicum is one semester, but if you wish, you can re-register once and extend the Studium Philosophicum by a further semester. The degree programs of the Faculty of Humanities, Social Sciences, and Theology are divided into modules. A module consists of one or more teaching units such as lectures and seminars. Students earn ECTS credits when they complete module examinations.
Students may earn up to 25 ECTS credits per semester in the Studium Philosophicum program. By way of comparison, an average of 30 ECTS credits are earned per semester on a Bachelor’s or Master’s degree program if the course is completed within the standard period of study.
However, it is also possible not to acquire ECTS credits and simply make the most of the Studium Philosophicum to get to know different subjects and university life.
The modules are selected individually according to your own interests, whereby a maximum of 10 ECTS credits per semester may be studied in any one subject area.
The entire range of modules is published on the Faculty of Humanities, Social Sciences, and Theology website in good time before the start of the lecture period. -

The application deadline for international applicants is July 15th for the winter semester and January 15th for the summer semester.
Those who have escaped the German winter abroad, or who have used the time after graduating from high school to gain their first professional experience, or who do not start in the winter semester for a completely different reason, can enter the Studium Philosophicum in the summer semester. This is a special feature, because regular Bachelor’s programs usually only start in the winter semester.
